Better Ingredients, Better Packaging

http://media.indiatimes.in

ECONOMIC PRINCIPLE:
Because of scarcity, people choose. All choices have an opportunity cost.
EXAMPLE: Companies have to make the choice of what they put in their products. Depending on the ingredients put in their products, they make the choice between putting in quality ingredients that cost more, or putting in lower quality ingredients that cost less.
THESIS Because of scarcity, people choose. All choices have an opportunity cost. From my research, I found that the opportunity cost of organic beauty products is influenced by the ingredients and packaging.

SYNTHESIS PARAGRAPH:
Customers have the choice between purchasing beauty products that are organic or chemically filled. Through this choice they have to decide if it is worth purchasing a more expensive product that has higher quality ingredients, or purchasing a products that has lower quality ingredients but is less expensive. If a customer purchases a product that is lower quality because it is less expensive, they lose the opportunity to buy a products that is more expensive but is higher quality and is better for the skin. According to Natasha Burton, in her article, she mentions that lower quality products are filled with “ emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrance, texture/feel improving chemicals”. This means that while the products are cheaper, they have ingredients that are not great quality and can be harsh on the skin. Kirsten Hudson mentions on her post, that non-organic beauty products contain “unspecified “fragrances” can cause irritation and even trigger allergic reactions.”. I know that from personal experience, that putting harsh chemicals and fragrances on my skin has caused red, itchy skin and has even caused hives and eczema on my skin. From what I have learned, ingredients can be more expensive when they are organic and higher quality. However, from what I have also found is that, higher quality ingredients are worth the price. They may be more expensive, but the opportunity of buying organic products, leads to healthy, non-irritated skin. Another thing that i learned about the opportunity cost of purchasing organic products, is their packaging. According to natasha Burton's article, companies, such as Thesis, use packaging that is “mostly glass at Thesis, which is more expensive than plastic, but is recyclable and reusable,”. By using glass instead of plastic, they can help the environment and re use all of their packaging. Packaging is an opportunity cost for the consumer. They can choose between glass packaging, which is more expensive, or they can choose plastic packaging, which is less expensive. By choosing the plastic package, they do get a lower priced product, but the package can't be recycled and reused the way glass can. If a consumer purchases an organic product in a glass package, they will have to pay more, but they can reuse and recycle their packaging. When a consumer has the opportunity to choose between an organic product or a chemical-filled product, they should go for the organic product. They will have higher-quality ingredients, which is better for the skin, and they can have better, more eco-friendly packaging. By making the choice to purchase an organic product, consumers will more benefits for their skin and their impact on the environment.
