Politicians own personal views highly affect how they handle and sway their campaigns. Staying with the ideas around Planned Parenthood, Democrats are in support and Republicans are against it. It’s easy to understand - in a liberal light, society should be given these operations as they provide women many sources of sexual health care; in a conservative case, society should refrain from sexual activity in general and receive their medical attention at their normal health care facility. Yet, some editorials and columns I have read suggest Republicans are more convinced of the “horrors” Planned Parenthood commit without completely understanding the organization’s standpoints and general statistics.
Politicians aside, any American generally interesting in politics can get very defensive of their side. In relation to Planned Parenthood, an incident involving their alleged use and sale of fetal tissue from aborted fetuses gained national attention. In the article ‘Once again, Republicans go too far on abortion’ from the Washington Post, a nationally recognized newspaper, “videos released last year by a group called the Center for Medical Progress” utilize somewhat undercover journalists, more of their own acting skills to portray a ‘deal’ between a PP representative and a fetus tissue-enthusiast.
These videos turned out to be completely made by the anti-abortion activists of the CMP. Not only did these activists gain national attention to a problem that was in fact not a problem in the slightest, they gained themselves jail time. One interesting point the article makes is that the “use of the fetal tissue… was something conservatives don’t particularly care about,” their main goal was to expose PP as the monsters they are, or are thought to be. The conservatives, who risked their lives and jobs and families, all for exposing a company that was seemingly doing no wrong, may not be as worried about the children as their faith or religious implication makes them seem. Mostly, their call-to-action is religion-affiliated, in which abortion is unholy and should not be given to any women under any circumstances.
FUTURE RESEARCH: Yet, after this affair, I found myself wondering, who are the good guys and who are the bad ones? Is Planned Parenthood one or the other, or potentially parts of both? More on this to come.
