Everyone loves to be #1, the best of the best, and to always be on better than anyone else. You look at different sports and sometimes you see some teams come in every season at the top. Always the top rated team and is always projected to be the one that finishes is first. You wonder how after every year, they are always back at the top in the rankings. Well I have done some research and I have a couple of reasons why they might be successful. They are most likely successful because they live in big city and bring in a lot of revenue, they have a solid coaching system that allows them to develop young players, they base their roster around key players such as catchers, pitchers, or shortstops.
If a team is located in a big city with a high population of people, then they have a chance of attracting fans which then lead to more money to spend on equipment and even some players. “ In general, teams in “big markets” attract more fans, allowing them to raise ticket prices.” When you raise ticket prices in brings in a lot of revenue that could lead to your team being successful. A team can also be successful with the star players that they build around. There are stars in many positions but the two most important positions on the field are catchers and shortstops. In the article Ranking baseball’s most important positions, By Andrew Kneeland, he says “There is a shortage of decent catchers in the league today, and replacing a superstar backstop is virtually an impossible task.” If you look at a team that is successful today, you can see that they have a star shortstop, pitcher or catcher.
A team might also have good success off of their good coaching skills and a good system to produce young players to become good players in the major leagues. In the article Baseball’s Best Farm Systems: How Much Do They Matter? By Neil Paine, he goes on to say “fans might point to the 1992 Atlanta Braves’ top-rated prospect class, which preceded a decade in which the Braves boasted the best record in baseball.” This goes to show that teams that have the better prospects in the lower farming systems, could lead to a really successful team in the years to come. It is not always a guarantee that your team is going to be good in the MLB if they are good in the lower levels because the game is so different.
