Heavy Metal Culture

I have never really understood why people enjoy listening to the screamo, hard metal guitar type of music in their free time, so I decided to see what people had to say about it. I found that there really is a sort of comfort that the people listening to this type of music have, it is much more than just music to them it is a sort of lifestyle. The author Shaunacy Ferro is a journalist who decided to take a deep look into the psychology of those who listen to heavy metal she wrote this article “Psychology Of Loving Heavy Metal” at http://www.popsci.com/article/science/psychology-loving-heavy-metal.
Out of all the music you could possibly listen to you might ask why would one find heavy metal to be the most appealing? According to the article the fans of heavy metal have “their need for uniqueness, their self-esteem, attitudes toward authority and religiosity,” they listen to this music because it makes them feel empowered that someone finally gets them going against the norm of everybody else. It was also brought up that “heavy metal was also correlated with openness, possibly because people with more open personalities would be drawn [this] music,” showing how these people just want to express themselves and they feel the most comfortable doing it with those who also enjoy this sort of rebel music.
In conclusion from researching why people tend to like different kinds of music there seems to be certain reasons for this kind of trend. There is psychology behind why people like these different kinds because it makes them feel comfortable and it makes them feel part of a group they fit into. Music helps people express themselves in anyway that they please.
