What are GMOs’s? GMO’s stand for Genetically Modified Organisms and it’s genetic material that has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. Some say GMO’s are a negative thing but some say they’re a positive thing. I think that companies should write about the effects of GMO’s, so that people are aware. Although, the FDA ruled that GMOs are not significantly different than naturally occurring foods. Also, the FDA states “87% consumers who want foods containing GMOs to be labeled.” Layla Katiraee, author of "10 studies proving GMOs are harmful? Not if science matters" (https://www.geneticliteracyproject.org/2015/11/13/10-studies-proving-gmos-are-harmful-not-if-science-matters/) states that GMOs actually do cause problems and have negative effects. All in all, they should label the products in order to show consumers what is in the food.
The side effects of GMOs includes “a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.”This suggests that GMOs can have a negative impact on not just consumers but also the environment. Also, 53% of Americans refuse to buy genetically modified foods. If this is the case, by labeling foods that they are GMOs, companies will lose profit overall which will hurt the food industry. On top of that it suggests “according to a recent CBS/New York Times poll, 53% of consumers said they would not buy food that has been genetically modified.” Even though this might hurt the food industry by writing there are GMOs, it’s only fair to consumers to know what they’re buying. To conclude, GMOs are artificial material that goes into some foods. Because of this, it brings questioning whether or not they should let the consumers know if it is a GMO product or not. Although, I think they should because people have a right to know what they’re eating.
