Freedom

The question about how dolphins and other sea giants should be preserved has been answered, moving swiftly forward towards the preservation of these animals should be in the minds of people. It is quite easy to say one cares about these creatures through their computer screen, but if any of what I said sparked any sympathy, one would most likely sign for petitions ending the gruesome acts done towards these animals. We call ourselves the most intelligent species on this planet; top of the food chain. Imagine a world where we, the people, are kept captive in order to entertain, or to sell. Wouldn’t our potentials be wasted? The same goes for the intelligent beings that roam our free earth. People who support whaling probably the same mental capacity of a dog, except dogs don’t have thumbs. My point is clear; in order to stop captivity and promotion of dolphin and whale watching at theme parks, people need to take initiative.

Close your eyes and try picturing a mother being separated from her son so her son could live in captivity for others’ entertainment. It’s a horrible sight. To even think of such a vile and dark subject should cause people to wonder if they have something wrong with them. Similarly whales and dolphins are highly intelligent creatures who want and need to live in complex social groups. In captivity they will usually have been separated from their families, often in cruel hunts and some when they are very young. An ecosystem is naturally built into this world, and season by season the same sort of things should occur, we inadvertently spoil this system by capturing these sea giants.  Wild whales and dolphins can swim up to 100 miles a day, hunting and playing. In captivity they have very little space and cannot behave naturally. A concrete tank can never replace their ocean home. People might argue that since dolphins and whales are kept in these tanks they are safe from predators out to get them; The mental, emotional and physical stress that a captive whale or dolphin suffers can weaken their immune system and make them prone to disease. Even though captive whales and dolphins are kept in an environment free of predators, pollution and other threats, they die young. The death rate for infant whales and dolphins is also much higher in captivity.

People should be glad to know that there are organizations, such as the WDC, out there to protect the rights that these dolphins and whales clearly have. The WDC tries their best to preserve these creatures because they understand the complexity of their minds. WDC has run many successful campaigns around the world against captivity. In 2012, they took 30,000 origami dolphins to present to the European Parliament in support of their campaign to end captivity across Europe which has already seen a number of countries such as Croatia and Slovenia ban the practice. They also  helped prevent the establishment of captive facilities in the Caribbean while India has also banned whale and dolphin captivity. In 2014, an online petition by WDC supporter, Kathleen Haase gathered over 275,000 signatures asking British Airways to end their relationship with SeaWorld. WDC has been at the forefront of the campaign to stop Georgia Aquarium's attempts to import 18 wild-caught beluga whales from Russia. After US officials turned down the application, WDC helped defend the case in court when the Aquarium appealed. Once again they were successful and finally in November 2015 the Aquarium announced it would no longer pursue the case.
