Opera and Youth

https://www.lyricopera.org/

Opera is an old art form with shrinking fanbase, but opera theatres like to have their methods of getting the youth to learn about Opera.  For instance, the Lyric Opera has it’s own national outreach program called the youth council. According to an article entitled “Opera Strives to Strike a Chord with US Youth” from the New York Post, a major newspaper in New York City, opera theatres can attract a younger audience by developing youth outreach programs and offering discounted tickets to younger people.

For example, the Youth Opera Council "gives high school students a chance to meet stars, go backstage and bring their friends to shows.”  They are also able to learn about opera from professional performers at the Lyric and the Lyric Opera Chorus.  They also have the opportunity to perform in different shows at the Civic Opera House.  I have a friend who is on the Youth Opera Council and is currently playing a role in the Lyric Opera’s production of Der Rosenkavalier.  This program is a great way the Lyric Opera has been able to keep the youth interested in this amazing art form.

Many opera companies like the Lyric Opera use subsided rates for children and college students.  The New York Post states that  “The Lyric addresses the cost issue by offering discounts for children and $20 tickets for college students. Sales under the college program are up 11 percent from 2013 to 2014, while attendance for primary and high school groups is up 25 percent over the same period.”  This is a fantastic way for the Lyric to attract younger audiences, and personally I am excited to take advantage of the $20 tickets for college students next year. Also, the fact that the discount for college students encourages me to attend as many performance as I can proves that this is a successful method of keeping opera a relevant artform in the eyes of today’s youth.

Further Research: In my next blog post I like to look into how opera theatres utilize modern technology to make performances more appealing to audiences.
