The Conflict With Technology and Time

Technology, it is the fishing hook with the bait on the end of it and if one is “hungry enough” they will not hesitate to take it. I argue that people lack self control and let their urge to access technology get the best of them and it conflicts with time management. Some may argue that there are apps that allow better organization, but those apps also are a distraction to the user because they are tempted to check their phone/computer and will most likely end up checking their email as well. Diana Clement writer for the New Zealand Herald states "Bad email and voicemail discipline steals time and distracts you from more demanding tasks, unless your role requires it, try to avoid reading and responding every time a new message arrives"(Clement 1). Technology is almost like a drug addiction, when the urge to access email or social media is present most people will cave in.

The New Zealand Herald believes that people are tempted to access technology because of boredom.  “If you're not careful, your entire day could be spent checking and replying to emails and chasing up loose ends on the internet, we've all done it,” which means do not let temptation get the best of you, it is a battle that is won by willpower. People are so compelled to access technology because it is easier to say “I can do it later” and forget about it while the internet slowly captures your attention. The internet and technology are not evil, in fact it is a very useful tool in most situations, but people do not use it correctly and that is why this is such a problem.
Future Research: I will research some of the most effective apps that help with time management.

  1. This is a super relatable because I think that it is something that applies to a ton of people our age. I know that I spend so much time mindlessly scrolling through news feeds when I know that I could and should be doing things that are more productive. I agree that I always find myself doing it more often when I am bored. It is a habit that I really have been trying to break.
